By webmaster | July 25, 2008
A ringtone is a sound (song or tone) that indicates an incoming call in a mobile phone. It serves for the same purpose as a conventional bell ring in a landline telephone. Ringtones are very familiar with mobile users nowadays (especially teenagers).
There are 3 types of Ringtones
1) Monophonic Ringtones
This type of ringtone belongs to the first generation of ringtone. It has the capability of playing only one note at a time. The most common format was RTTL (Ring Tone Transfer Language) developed by Nokia Corp. for transferring monophonic ringtones from one mobile to other.
2) Polyphonic Ringtones
Polyphonic Ringtones started in Japan by 2001. Polyphonic Ringtones have the capacity of playing several notes at a time. This type of ringtone used the sequenced recording methods like MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) format which allows transfer of digital message between electronic devices.
3) Truetone
Truetone is the latest ringtone technology which allows using high quality audio such as songs to be used as a ringtone in a mobile phone. Truetone is also called as “MasterTone” or “SuperPhonic tones”. Most common format includes Mp3, WMA etc.
In today’s ringtone technology it is possible to download latest songs directly from your mobile service provider, internet sites etc. You can even transfer songs from your computer via a USB cable or Bluetooth connection. Latest mobile phones support multiple file formats and mobile producers introduce new models (music edition) that are suitable for music lovers.
